Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a staple of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the asynchronous messaging system.
While removing this feature, FromSoftware isn't abandoning all asynchronous elements. The bloodstain mechanic will return, enhanced to allow players to loot the ghosts of fallen comrades, offering a different form of player interaction.
The omission of messaging aligns with FromSoftware's vision for a more "compressed RPG" experience in Nightreign. The game's three-day structure and focus on consistent intensity contribute to this streamlined design, minimizing downtime and maximizing variety.
Other Asynchronous Features Remain
Despite the removal of the messaging system, key asynchronous features from Elden Ring will be retained and improved upon. This focus on refining existing mechanics rather than adding new ones supports the overall goal of a tighter, more intense gameplay loop.
Release Date
Elden Ring Nightreign's release is targeted for 2025, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024. A more precise release window is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
