Paradox Interactive Adjusts Strategy Following Game Development Setbacks
Following recent challenges, including the cancellation of Life By You and the troubled launch of Cities: Skylines 2, Paradox Interactive has outlined its revised approach to game development. The company acknowledges shifting player expectations and is adapting its strategies accordingly.
Paradox Interactive Addresses Recent Cancellations and Delays
Heightened Player Expectations and Technical Hurdles
Paradox Interactive CEO Mattias Lilja and CCO Henrik Fahraeus discussed evolving player attitudes towards game releases. They noted increased player expectations and a decreased tolerance for post-launch bug fixes. The experience with Cities: Skylines 2's problematic launch highlighted this shift.
The publisher emphasizes a more rigorous approach to quality assurance, aiming for more thorough pre-release problem resolution. They also recognize the value of expanded pre-release player testing for valuable feedback. Fahraeus stated regarding Cities: Skylines 2, "If we could have brought players in to try it on a larger scale, that would have helped," indicating a future commitment to greater player involvement in pre-release testing.
The indefinite delay of Prison Architect 2 exemplifies this new approach. While acknowledging positive gameplay, Lilja cited technical challenges as the reason for the delay, stating, "We had quality issues, which means to give the players the game they deserve, we decided to delay it." He differentiated this from the Life By You cancellation, explaining that the delay stems from difficulty in resolving unforeseen technical problems, rather than fundamental design flaws.
Lilja highlighted the increased difficulty in addressing certain technical issues and the impact of player expectations in a competitive market. He emphasized the "winner-takes-all" nature of the gaming industry and the resulting tendency for players to quickly abandon games with significant issues.
The negative reception to Cities: Skylines 2's launch, including a joint apology and planned "fan feedback summit," underscores the company's commitment to addressing these concerns. The cancellation of Life By You, attributed to unmet expectations and internal challenges, further reinforces the company's revised approach. Lilja acknowledged areas where Paradox lacked a complete understanding of the challenges involved, taking full responsibility for these shortcomings.
