After 15 years at Sledgehammer Games, Call of Duty multiplayer creative director Greg Reisdorf has announced his departure. His tenure, beginning with the development of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011), spanned numerous pivotal titles in the franchise.
Reisdorf's contributions extended across multiple Sledgehammer Games' Call of Duty projects. His early work on Modern Warfare 3 included memorable sequences like Soap's gurney scene in the "Blood Brothers" mission. He played a key role in shaping the "boots on the ground" era of Call of Duty, contributing significantly to the gameplay mechanics of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, including boost jumps, dodging, and tactical reloads. While he acknowledges some design choices, like the "Pick 13" system in Advanced Warfare, weren't ideal, his work on unique weapon signatures, energy weapons, and multiplayer maps remains notable.
His impact also resonated in Call of Duty: WW2, where he helped rectify the initial class-restricted weapon system, and Call of Duty: Vanguard, where he championed the design of traditional three-lane maps prioritizing fun gameplay over strict military realism.
Most recently, Reisdorf served as creative director for the multiplayer component of 2023's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. This involved overseeing the development of live season modes, such as Season 1's "Snowfight" and "Infectious Holiday," and contributing to over 20 modes throughout the game's post-launch support. His work included revisiting and enhancing classic maps from Modern Warfare 2 (2009), adding subtle yet impactful details.
Reisdorf's Twitter announcement on January 13th confirmed his departure on January 10th, marking the end of a significant chapter in his career. He expressed excitement for future opportunities within the gaming industry.
