Bungie's Marathon: A Year of Silence Broken, Playtests Planned for 2025
After a year of radio silence, Bungie's upcoming sci-fi extraction shooter, Marathon, has received a much-anticipated developer update. Initially unveiled at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase, the game, a revival of Bungie's pre-Halo IP, generated significant excitement but was quickly followed by a prolonged lack of news.
Game Director Joe Ziegler addressed the community's concerns, confirming the game's ongoing development and describing it as Bungie's take on the extraction shooter genre. While gameplay footage remains unavailable, Ziegler assured fans that Marathon is "on track," undergoing significant revisions based on extensive player testing. He teased a class-based system featuring customizable "Runners" with unique abilities, showcasing two examples: "Thief" and "Stealth," hinting at their respective playstyles.
Expanded playtests are scheduled for 2025, offering a broader player base the chance to participate in the game's development. Ziegler urged fans to wishlist Marathon on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox to demonstrate interest and facilitate future communication regarding updates.
A Reimagining of a Classic
Marathon is a fresh interpretation of Bungie's 1990s trilogy, marking the studio's most significant departure from the Destiny franchise in over a decade. While not a direct sequel, it's set within the same universe, offering familiar elements for longtime fans while remaining accessible to newcomers. The game takes place on Tau Ceti IV, where players, as Runners, compete for valuable alien artifacts in high-stakes extraction matches, either solo or in teams of three. Competition is fierce, with other crews vying for the same loot and the ever-present threat of a perilous extraction.
Initially conceived as a purely PvP experience without a single-player campaign, Marathon's future direction under Ziegler's leadership remains to be seen. However, he indicated the addition of elements intended to modernize the game and introduce a new narrative arc, promising ongoing updates and content.
Challenges Faced During Development
The extended development period has been impacted by several factors. In March 2024, the original project lead, Chris Barrett, was reportedly dismissed from Bungie following allegations of misconduct. This change in leadership, coupled with significant workforce reductions affecting approximately 17% of Bungie's staff, has undoubtedly contributed to the slower development pace.
Despite the delays, the announcement of expanded playtests in 2025 offers a glimmer of hope for fans eagerly awaiting Marathon's release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, with confirmed cross-play and cross-save functionality. The developer update suggests that, despite the setbacks, development is progressing, albeit cautiously.
