He cited Bungie's Destiny and Harmonix's Guitar Hero as significant regrets, describing them as among the "worst decisions" of his tenure. Despite his early proximity to Bungie during his time at Microsoft, Destiny's initial concept didn't resonate with him until later expansions. Similarly, he initially doubted the potential of Guitar Hero.
Spencer emphasized a forward-looking approach, stating that he avoids dwelling on past mistakes. He acknowledged numerous missed opportunities but remains focused on future projects.
Despite past setbacks, Xbox continues to secure major franchises. Dune: Awakening, an action RPG from Funcom, is slated for release on Xbox Series S, alongside PC and PS5. However, Funcom's chief product officer, Scott Junior, highlighted the challenges of optimizing the game for the Xbox Series S, leading to a PC-first release strategy. He reassured players that the game will still perform well even on older hardware.
Indie developer Jyamma Games' Enotria: The Last Song has experienced significant delays on Xbox. The studio attributes the delay to a lack of response from Microsoft, despite the game's readiness for both Series S and X consoles. CEO Jacky Greco expressed frustration over the lack of communication, resulting in the game's initial release on PlayStation 5 and PC only. The Xbox release remains uncertain.
