Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth's lead designer reveals the clever reuse of existing assets in the creation of Dondoko Island's extensive furniture collection. Discover how this approach significantly expanded the minigame's scope.
Dondoko Island: A Minigame of Unexpected Scale
Leveraging Existing Assets for Expansion
In a July 30th interview with Automaton, Michiko Hatoyama, lead designer on Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, discussed the surprising growth of Dondoko Island. Initially conceived as a smaller feature, the minigame's scope dramatically increased during development. Hatoyama stated, "At first, Dondoko Island was smaller, but it expanded unexpectedly." This expansion was largely fueled by the addition of numerous furniture recipes.
RGG Studio's efficient use of pre-existing assets was key to this expansion. By repurposing and modifying existing game assets from the Yakuza series, the team rapidly created individual furniture pieces "in a matter of minutes," a stark contrast to the days or even months typically required for new asset creation. This extensive asset library allowed for the rapid integration of a vast array of furniture into Dondoko Island.
The decision to expand Dondoko Island and its furniture options stemmed from a desire to offer players fresh and engaging gameplay. The expansive island and extensive crafting options provide players with significant freedom and enjoyment in transforming the dilapidated island into a luxurious resort.
Released on January 25, 2024, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (the ninth mainline entry in the Yakuza series, excluding spin-offs) received widespread acclaim. Its extensive asset library, built over years of development, proved invaluable in creating the surprisingly large-scale Dondoko Island minigame, offering players countless hours of immersive island-building fun.
