Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PC Release: Director Discusses Mods and DLC Possibilities
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi recently shared insights into the PC version of the game, addressing the modding community and the possibility of future DLC. The interview, published on the Epic Games blog on December 13th, revealed some interesting details.
DLC: A Matter of Player Demand
While the development team initially considered adding episodic DLC to the PC version, resource constraints led them to prioritize completing the final installment of the Remake trilogy. Hamaguchi stated that adding new content is currently not a priority, but he remains open to the possibility: "If we receive strong requests from players after the release regarding certain matters, we would like to consider them." Essentially, the future of DLC hinges on significant player demand.
A Message to Modders: Creativity with Responsibility
Hamaguchi also addressed the modding community, acknowledging the inevitable influx of user-created content. While the game doesn't have official mod support, he expressed respect for the creativity of modders, but cautioned against offensive or inappropriate modifications. "We respect the creativity of the modding community and welcome their creations—though we ask modders not to create or install anything offensive or inappropriate."
PC Version Enhancements
The PC version boasts several improvements over the PS5 release, including enhanced lighting, higher-resolution textures, and improved 3D models, leveraging the capabilities of more powerful hardware. The team also addressed previous criticisms regarding the uncanny valley effect sometimes present in character faces, refining the lighting rendering to mitigate this issue. However, adapting the mini-games for PC proved challenging, requiring extensive work on key configuration settings.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launches on Steam and the Epic Games Store on January 23rd, 2025. The game originally released on PS5 on February 9th, 2024, to widespread critical acclaim.
