The creator of Balatro did not expect such a grand success for his game

LocalThunk, the solo developer behind the indie sensation Balatro, witnessed an unexpected triumph in 2024. The game defied all expectations, selling over 5 million copies and making waves in the gaming industry, culminating in multiple awards at The Game Awards 2024. Even LocalThunk himself was astounded by the game's reception, initially anticipating modest reviews in the 6-7 range due to its unconventional concept.

However, a glowing 91/100 score from PC Gamer, followed by similarly positive reviews, propelled Balatro to an impressive 90 Metacritic and OpenCritic average. This success came as a complete surprise to the creator, who admitted he would have personally rated his own game no higher than an 8.

Playstack, the publisher, contributed significantly through proactive press engagement prior to launch. Yet, the true catalyst for Balatro's phenomenal sales was organic word-of-mouth marketing, exceeding initial sales projections by a staggering 10-20 times. The game's launch on Steam saw a breathtaking 119,000 copies sold within the first 24 hours—an experience the developer described as utterly surreal.

The overwhelming success of Balatro has left its creator humble, admitting there's no single, easily replicated formula for other indie developers to emulate.
