Square Enix Seeks Fan Input After Life is Strange: Double Exposure's Underwhelming Reception
Following the less-than-stellar reception of Life is Strange: Double Exposure, Square Enix has launched a survey to gather feedback from fans of the series. The survey aims to understand key areas of dissatisfaction and inform the development of future Life is Strange titles.
The October 2024 release of Life is Strange: Double Exposure, a continuation of Max Caulfield's story, had high expectations. However, the game's performance fell short of expectations, receiving mixed reviews. A Metacritic score of 73 (critics) and 4.2 (users) on the PS5 version highlights the game's lukewarm reception, often attributed to controversial narrative choices.
Further complicating matters, developer Deck Nine Studios announced layoffs in December 2024. In response, Square Enix distributed a 15-minute questionnaire to Life is Strange fans, seeking feedback on various aspects of Double Exposure, including narrative, gameplay, technical performance, and overall value. The survey also gauges players' interest in future installments of the series.
Understanding the Disappointment
Square Enix clearly anticipated a more positive response to Double Exposure. The survey results will be crucial in determining the game's shortcomings. This contrasts sharply with the positive reception of Deck Nine's previous Life is Strange title, True Colors, which was lauded for its compelling narrative and emotionally resonant protagonist, Alex Chen.
The Future of Life is Strange
While Double Exposure hinted at potential storylines for future entries, Square Enix's community feedback will likely significantly shape the direction of the series. The extent to which future games will incorporate fan suggestions remains to be seen, presenting a balancing act between fan service and creative vision. Only time will reveal how this feedback influences the next chapter in the Life is Strange saga.
