FBC: Firebreak - Unexpected Multiplayer FPS Hit
Mar 27,2025Author: Noah
When Remedy Entertainment, the acclaimed studio behind the critically acclaimed single-player game *Control*, announced their venture into multiplayer with *FBC: Firebreak*, skepticism was understandable. However, after witnessing a hands-off demo, it's clear that this three-player PvE first-person shooter set six years after the events of *Control* is anything but ordinary. *FBC: Firebreak* offers a refreshingly unique experience in the crowded multiplayer shooter genre, blending delightful weirdness with a commitment to player freedom. As game director Mike Kayatta emphasized, "We're not about daily check-ins. We're not interested in monthly grinds. We don't want to give anybody a second job."
In *FBC: Firebreak*, you can dive in for a quick 20-minute session or extend your playtime for hours. The game introduces engaging Perk unlocks and new character combinations, ensuring each run feels fresh. Set within The Oldest House, players take on the role of volunteer first responders, equipped with an array of bizarre weaponry. These characters, from secretaries to rangers, are the unsung heroes stepping in when things go awry. While the Federal Bureau of Control might not label you as expendable, in the world of *FBC: Firebreak*, you certainly feel the urgency and importance of your mission.

Upon starting the game, you select a Job (mission) and a Crisis Kit (loadout), then set the Threat Level (difficulty) and Clearance Level, which dictates the number of zones you'll navigate. These zones are separated by containment doors, leading you through stages of your Job. In the demo, the Job named "Paper Chase" unfolded in a seemingly mundane office section of the FBC building, where you and your teammates tackle the spreading Hiss. While you can escape quickly, staying longer to collect currencies for gear upgrades adds a strategic layer, making your return to HQ more challenging.
*FBC: Firebreak* distinguishes itself with its array of quirky, homebrew weaponry. From a hand-cranked snowball launcher that extinguishes fires and douses sticky-note monsters, to a cobbled-together zapper that can unleash lightning storms, the game's arsenal is delightfully unconventional. Even traditional weapons like machine guns and shotguns have unique applications, particularly effective against the game's signature sticky-note monsters, which you must eradicate to prevent them from overrunning the building.
Beyond the weapons, *FBC: Firebreak* integrates fun in-universe mechanics, such as office supply shelves that replenish ammo, makeshift turrets assembled from boxes, stereo speakers that deter the Hiss, and rinse stations to remove aggressive sticky notes. Unlockable Perks add variety to gameplay, with unique effects like bullets returning to your clip upon missing and self-extinguishing by jumping. Stacking Perks enhances their effects, and sharing them with teammates adds a cooperative element.
While designed for three players, *FBC: Firebreak* supports solo and duo play as well. Remedy aims for accessibility with lower minimum PC specs while also supporting advanced features like DLSS4, nVidia Reflex, and full ray-tracing. The game will be Steam Deck verified and launch on Xbox and PC Game Pass, as well as PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium on day one. Post-launch content and paid cosmetics are planned, but microtransactions will be limited.

Although I haven't played *FBC: Firebreak* yet, the demo certainly impressed. This is far from a typical multiplayer shooter, and its focus on short, engaging sessions without the need for a long-term commitment is a refreshing nod to gaming's past. *FBC: Firebreak* promises a unique, enjoyable experience that stands out in today's gaming landscape.
