Civilization 7 has hit the market, but with a 'mixed' user review rating on Steam, it's clear that the game's reception is not universally positive. Despite this, Take-Two's CEO, Strauss Zelnick, remains optimistic. He believes that the game's dedicated fanbase, referred to as the "legacy Civ audience," will grow to appreciate the game as they spend more time with it.
Currently, Civilization 7 is accessible to those who opt for advanced access, a group largely composed of the series' most ardent fans. These players have been vocal in their Steam reviews, expressing dissatisfaction with the user interface, a perceived lack of map variety, and the absence of certain expected features at launch. In response, Firaxis has committed to enhancing the UI, introducing team-based multiplayer options, and increasing the variety of map types, among other planned updates.
In an interview with IGN, Zelnick addressed the mixed reviews, including a notably low score from Eurogamer. He highlighted the game's solid Metacritic score of 81 and pointed out that over 20 press reviews rated it above 90. Zelnick emphasized that the initial hesitation from the core audience is typical with each new Civilization release, as fans adjust to the innovative changes introduced by the development team.
One of the significant changes in Civilization 7 is the introduction of a full campaign that spans three Ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern. Each Age Transition involves selecting a new civilization, choosing Legacies to carry forward, and witnessing the evolution of the game world. This system, unprecedented in the series, is a bold move that Zelnick believes will be appreciated by fans in time.
While Zelnick's confidence in the game's future is clear, Firaxis faces the immediate challenge of improving sentiment on Steam. The platform's user review rating significantly impacts a game's visibility and success, making it crucial for Firaxis to address the community's concerns promptly and effectively.
