SAG-AFTRA's Strike Against Video Game Companies: A Fight for AI Protections and Fair Compensation

SAG-AFTRA, the actors' union, launched a strike against major video game companies on July 26th, 2024, following protracted negotiations. This action highlights critical concerns regarding the ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI) and fair compensation for performers.

Key Issues Driving the Strike:

The core dispute centers on the burgeoning use of AI in video game production. While not inherently opposed to AI technology, SAG-AFTRA members express deep anxieties about its potential to replace human actors. Specific concerns include:

  • Unauthorized AI Replication: The fear of AI replicating actors' voices and likenesses without consent or proper compensation.
  • Displacement of Performers: The possibility of AI taking over smaller roles, hindering career progression for aspiring actors.
  • Ethical Concerns: The potential for AI-generated content to contradict an actor's personal values.

Temporary Solutions and New Agreements:

To address these challenges and provide interim solutions, SAG-AFTRA has implemented several agreements:

  • Tiered-Budget Independent Interactive Media Agreement (I-IMA): This agreement, established in February 2024, caters to indie and low-budget projects ($250,000 - $30 million budget), incorporating AI protections previously rejected by the industry.

  • Interim Interactive Media Agreement and Interim Interactive Localization Agreement: These agreements offer temporary solutions covering various aspects, including compensation, AI usage, working conditions, and payment terms. Importantly, these agreements exclude expansion packs and DLCs, focusing on initial game releases. Projects approved under these agreements are exempt from the strike.

Negotiation Timeline and Union Resolve:

Negotiations began in October 2022, with a 98.32% strike authorization vote by SAG-AFTRA members in September 2023. Despite progress on some fronts, the lack of strong, enforceable AI protections remains the primary obstacle. Union leaders have expressed unwavering determination to secure fair treatment and prevent the exploitation of their members through AI.

The strike underscores the union's commitment to protecting its members' rights and livelihoods in the face of rapidly evolving technology within the lucrative video game industry. The outcome will significantly impact the future of AI usage and labor practices in the sector.
