Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor

Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the franchise's first open-world title, is experiencing disappointing sales, falling short of expectations and even being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, according to recent reports.

Despite initially positive reviews upon its August 2024 release, player feedback regarding the game's combat and stealth mechanics has been largely negative. While Ubisoft addressed these concerns with post-launch updates, the impact on sales has been minimal. This underperformance led to a significant drop in Ubisoft's stock price shortly after the game's launch, raising concerns about the company's financial stability.

VGC and industry journalist Christopher Dring reported that Star Wars Outlaws is not only underperforming but is also selling fewer copies than Jedi: Survivor. While precise sales figures remain unavailable, Star Wars Outlaws' European ranking at 47th best-selling game of 2024 further highlights its struggles.

Several factors contribute to Jedi: Survivor's success. As a sequel to the popular Jedi: Fallen Order, it benefited from pre-existing fanbase and critical acclaim upon its April 2023 release. A later PS4 and Xbox One update further boosted its sales.

In contrast, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction, despite ongoing updates and DLC releases. The November 2024 release of "Star Wars Outlaws: Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming Spring 2025 release of "Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate's Fortune" (featuring Hondo Ohnaka), aim to revitalize interest. However, whether these additions will be enough to significantly improve sales remains uncertain.

The disparity in performance underscores the challenges of creating a successful open-world Star Wars game, particularly when compared to a well-received, established single-player title.
