Sega's recent trademark filings for the Ecco the Dolphin IP have ignited speculation about a potential franchise revival. The trademarks, filed in late December 2024 and made public recently, mark a significant development after a 24-year hiatus.
The Return of Ecco?
Gematsu's report on Sega's December 27th, 2024 trademark filings for "Ecco" and "Ecco the Dolphin" has sparked excitement among fans. The original Ecco the Dolphin, released in 1992 by Sega and developed by Appaloosa Interactive (formerly Novotrade International), captivated players with its unique blend of underwater exploration and alien encounters. The series continued with four sequels until 2000. While a planned sequel, Ecco II: Sentinels of the Universe, was abandoned following the decline of the Sega Dreamcast, the possibility of a revival remains.

Appaloosa Interactive is no longer active, but many of its staff, including Ecco the Dolphin's creator Ed Annunziata, remain prominent in the gaming industry. Annunziata, in a 2019 interview with NintendoLife, expressed his enduring hope for a future Ecco sequel, stating, "One thing I can say is in the future, people are playing this game. I never give up!"
Currently, concrete details regarding the future of Ecco the Dolphin are scarce. However, the trademark filings suggest Sega is actively considering the franchise's potential. This aligns with Sega's recent surge in activity, encompassing numerous projects across classic IPs like Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Shinobi, and Virtua Fighter, as well as new ventures such as Project Century and a new RPG-style Virtua Fighter. The future of Ecco remains uncertain, but the possibility of a return is certainly intriguing.
