Announcing Ananta: The Formerly Known as Project Mugen Open-World RPG
Remember Project Mugen, the urban open-world RPG from Naked Rain and NetEase? It's undergone a name change and is now officially called Ananta. First revealed at Gamescom 2023, the game has finally unveiled a new trailer after a long silence, with further details promised on December 5th. Until then, enjoy the official trailer:
The Mystery of the Name Change
The developers haven't yet commented on the reason for the name change. Interestingly, "Ananta" means "infinite" in Sanskrit, mirroring the meaning of "Mugen" (also "infinite"). The Chinese title reinforces this thematic consistency.
The gaming community is divided on the rebranding, but universally relieved the project hasn't been cancelled. Comparisons are already being drawn with Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. While Ananta's trailer is visually impressive, the lack of gameplay footage gives Neverness to Everness a perceived advantage for some players. Personally, I find Ananta's visuals more captivating.
A Curious Turn of Events
Adding to the intrigue, the development team has deleted all their original social media accounts, including a YouTube channel boasting over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. Only the Discord server remains, simply renamed to reflect the title change. This unexpected move has left many gamers puzzled.
In Ananta, players assume the role of an Infinite Trigger, a supernatural investigator combating paranormal threats. The cast of characters includes Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila. For further details on gameplay, visit the official website.
