There are four main endgame events you can encounter in the Path of Exile 2 Atlas map: Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions. PoE 2 revives several seasonal mechanics from original Path of Exile Leagues as endgame features – the Expedition system is lifted from the original Expedition League.
This guide explains how to find and start an Expedition, how to interact with the Detonator and Explosives, how to access the Delirium Passive Skill Tree, and the unique Expedition rewards you can get from this endgame PoE 2 system.
PoE 2 Expedition & Detonation Mechanic, Explained
On the Atlas screen, map nodes with a guaranteed endgame event are marked with certain icons. Map nodes that contain an Expedition will have an ethereal light blue icon with what appears to be a spiral-like shape on it.
You can guarantee Expedition encounters on map nodes in the Atlas screen with an Expedition Precursor Tablet, which must be placed into a completed Lost Tower slot.
After loading into a map with an Expedition, explore the zone until you find an area covered in Markers and a tent featuring one of four NPCs. They will explain the basics of the event, but not the specifics of how to interact with the Expedition mechanics properly.
In the middle of the Expedition you will see a Detonator, and a new UI element will appear on the bottom-right of the screen for Explosives. Your goal in an Expedition is to set Explosives optimally to spawn Runic Monsters, Unearthed Remnants, and Excavated Chests.
- Runic Monsters: Spawned by Explosives detonated near Red Markers.
- The larger the Marker, the larger the Runic Monster pack will be.
- Red Markers make up the significant majority of Markers in the area, which spawn a pack of Runic Monsters, which are then empowered by Unearthed Remnants.
- Unearthed Remnants: Signified by a tooltip floating above a relic on the ground.
- Offers a beneficial a negative event modifier.
- For example, monsters may deal more Elemental damage, but the Rarity of items rewarded from Excavated Chests will increase.
- Excavated Chests: Spawned by Explosives detonated near Black Markers with the spiral Expedition symbol
- Contains event-specific rewards like Artifacts and Logbooks as well as powerful Currencies, Waystones, and endgame gear
Click the Explosives button on your screen, then hover over the Expedition environment to see its area of effect. Explosives will only activate Markers that are contained within the green circle radius. For optimal Expedition farming, PoE 2 players should spread out their Explosives so that these AoE circles do not overlap.
Once you have placed all of your available Explosives, go back to the Detonator and interact with it. The explosives will activate all Markers their AoE areas contained, spawn Runic Monsters will be empowered by your detonated Remnants, and begin the event.
If you die during an Expedition the map will reset like normal, but if you become overwhelmed, you can run away and come back later. The event does not end if you leave the Expedition area – a viable strategy is to Detonate your Explosives, run away, then come back to take on every Excavated enemy at once with powerful AoE abilities.
Expedition Pinnacle Map
In Expeditions, Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop an item called an Expedition Logbook. Speak with the Dannig in the Hideout to open the Expedition Map for that logbook – slot the Logbook into the bottom slot on this screen, then click "Open Portals".
Just like with Waystone maps, Logbook Portals will appear around the Map Device and allow you to go to the Expedition map slotted. This is essentially an enormous Expedition event, with more than triple the normal number of Explosives available.
The Expedition Pinnacle Map system features its own Pinnacle Boss: Olroth. This boss does not always spawn during a Logbook map, but the higher level the map, the higher chance it has to spawn.
If Olroth is on your current Expedition Map, you should see a skull on the minimap. Place your Explosives optimally to reach this Skull and fight Olroth.
Defeating Olroth is essential to earn Expedition Passive Skill Tree points. You will get 2x points every time you beat Olroth in Logbooks – Path of Exile 2 players can then use these in a special section of the Atlas Passive Skill Tree specifically for this event.
Expedition Passive Skill Tree
Found in the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu, the Expedition Passive Skill Tree adds modifiers to the Expedition event to make it more rewarding by increasing Expedition Currency rewards, boosting Monster spawns, and buffing the effects of Remnants.
To see your Expedition passives, PoE 2 players should open up their Atlas Map, select the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu on the top-left, and then look to the btop right of the Atlas Skill Tree in this screen.
The Ritual Passive Skill Tree has a glowing blue coloration that spirals outward, with arms that hold eight Notable nodes and eight nodes that increase the difficulty of Logbooks (and the Olroth boss).
Because you are rewarded with 2x Expedition Passive Skill points whenever you beat the Expedition Pinnacle boss, you must increase the difficulty of the Pinnacle encounter every time you go for a new Notable node.

Weight of History
Of these Expedition Notable nodes, PoE 2 players should go for 'Disturbed Rest', 'Detailed Records', and 'Timed Detonations'. These all grant major bonuses to the number of rewards you can expect to get from Expeditions without too many downsides. After these, go for 'Weight of History', 'Unearthed Anomalies', and 'Legendary Battles', which can make the event much harder but improve your rewards even more.
Avoid the 'Extreme Archaeology' passive. It might seem powerful, especially because it reduces enemy Life on spawn. But going from 5x Explosives to just one is a significant reduction in total rewards you can get from the event. It costs a lot of Gold to re-spec away from this if you make this mistake.
PoE 2 Expedition Event Rewards
Artifacts & Coinage Currencies Are Used For Purchasing Gear
The primary Expedition rewards PoE 2 players can get are Artifacts. There are four Artifacts which can be collected en masse like other Currencies. Each Artifact can be used to trade with a specific Expedition event vendor, who will provide a selection of specific types of Gear.

Each Expedition features one of these vendors, so you can only access one vendor's inventory on each Expedition encounter. Artifacts are not removed from your inventory after completing a map, though, so be sure to bring along your Artifacts when taking on Expedition Maps.
You can also find Exotic Coinage as a reward from Expeditions. PoE 2 players can use these to refresh the vendor inventory for any of the four Expedition NPCs.
Expedition Logbooks Open A Unique Expedition Map To Progress
Expedition Logbooks can rarely drop from Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests. These Logbooks are tied to the Expedition Pinnacle system. Bring a Logbook to Dannig to open up the Expedition Map and take on one of many different Expedition zones.
There is a small chance for the Pinnacle Boss – Olroth – to spawn during these special Expedition Maps. Defeating Olroth rewards 2x Expedition Passive Skill Tree points, high-tier Currency, and a chance to drop one of several exclusive Uniques. As you increase the difficulty of your Expedition Maps and Logbooks, Olroth will spawn more often, and drop higher-tier Rewards on death.
