Nvidia's New App Causes FPS Drops in Some Games
Nvidia's recently released application is causing frame rate drops in certain games and PC configurations. This article explores the performance issues stemming from Nvidia's latest game optimization software.
Impact on Game Performance
Testing by PC Gamer revealed inconsistent frame rates in some games and PC builds. Several users reported stuttering while using the app. An Nvidia staff member suggested a temporary workaround: disabling the "Game Filters and Photo Mode" overlay.
In tests with Black Myth: Wukong (Ryzen 7 7800X3D and RTX 4070 Super), disabling the overlay slightly improved average frame rates (59 fps to 63 fps at 1080p, Very High settings). However, enabling the overlay and reducing graphics settings to Medium resulted in a significant 12% frame rate drop. Cyberpunk 2077 tests (Core Ultra 9 285K and RTX 4080 Super) showed no noticeable difference with the overlay on or off, suggesting the issue affects specific games and hardware combinations.
PC Gamer's testing followed reports on Twitter (X), where users shared similar experiences and proposed solutions, including reverting to older graphics drivers. Currently, Nvidia's official solution remains disabling the overlay.
Nvidia App's Official Launch
Initially launched in beta in February 2024 as a GeForce Experience replacement, the Nvidia App officially launched in November 2024, coinciding with a graphics driver update. The new app boasts enhanced features and a redesigned overlay system, eliminating the need for account logins.
Despite these improvements, Nvidia needs to address the performance issues affecting some users. The inconsistent impact across different games and hardware configurations requires further investigation.
