On January 19, TikTok, the popular social media platform, temporarily halted its operations in the US, which unexpectedly affected Marvel Snap, a renowned card game developed by Second Dinner Studios and published by Nuverse, a ByteDance subsidiary. This unexpected halt led to Marvel Snap being unavailable for 24 hours. Although the game is now back online, full access has yet to be restored, with in-game purchases currently unavailable. In response to this disruption, the developers are considering a change of publisher and plan to shift some services to internal resources, as stated in an official announcement on Platform X.
The decision to explore these options stems from political risks. TikTok has been granted a 90-day extension to sell 50% of its business to a local owner. Should this deal fail, TikTok and related projects like Marvel Snap might face another blockage.
Second Dinner Studios has assured fans that more information will be provided in the future. Despite many players reporting issues with authorization, the game remains viewable on Steam for PC users. The developers at Second Dinner expressed their surprise at the incident and are diligently working to fully restore the game. An official statement from Platform X reinforces their commitment:
“Marvel Snap is here to stay. We're working hard to restore the game as quickly as possible, and we'll keep players informed of our progress.”
One of the most frustrating aspects of this situation was the lack of prior warning to players. Many continued to make in-game purchases, unaware of the impending lockout.
