HBO is reportedly in advanced negotiations with acclaimed actor John Lithgow, known for his role as Lord Farquaad in Shrek, to portray the iconic Hogwarts headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, in their upcoming Harry Potter series.
While Variety suggests Lithgow is nearing a deal to secure the coveted role, HBO remains tight-lipped, declining to confirm the casting. This follows November reports naming Mark Rylance as the frontrunner for the Dumbledore part.
“We understand the significant interest surrounding this project and the resulting speculation,” an HBO spokesperson stated. “As we progress through pre-production, casting confirmations will only be released upon finalization of contracts.”
Lithgow's extensive filmography includes notable roles in The World According to Garp, Terms of Endearment, Footloose, Dexter, and The Crown, showcasing his versatility and range.

The series will prioritize British talent, mirroring the films, a decision perhaps influenced by J.K. Rowling's reported "significant involvement" in the casting process.
Announced in April 2023, the Harry Potter adaptation promises a faithful, more in-depth exploration of the novels compared to the film series. Succession producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod (also a Game of Thrones veteran) are attached to direct and write.
