Guerrilla Games' Horizon Multiplayer: A Million-Player Ambitions or a Preemptive Strike?
Guerrilla Games' upcoming Horizon multiplayer game is generating significant buzz, with recent evidence suggesting ambitious player projections or perhaps a cautious approach to avoid launch-day server issues.
A recent job listing for a Senior Platform Engineer reveals a requirement for "proven experience building and operating multi-service, 1M+ user globally distributed systems." This strongly suggests Guerrilla anticipates a player base exceeding one million, hinting at considerable confidence in the game's appeal. The focus on robust live-service infrastructure capable of handling such a large player count further reinforces this idea.
However, this focus on scalability could also be a proactive measure to prevent a repeat of the Helldivers 2 launch, where server overload significantly hampered the player experience. While there's no guarantee of similar success for the Horizon multiplayer title, Guerrilla's preparedness is understandable.
The Horizon multiplayer project, rumored for years, remains unannounced. However, a previous job listing hinted at a new Horizon game release in 2025. Given the timeline and the absence of news regarding a third mainline entry, this 2025 release could very well be the anticipated multiplayer title. With years of development under its belt, and assuming no major setbacks, a reveal this year seems increasingly likely.
