Nicolas Cage has issued a stark warning against the use of artificial intelligence in acting, asserting that actors who allow AI to influence their performances are heading towards "a dead end." He argues that AI, being incapable of reflecting the human condition, cannot authentically portray human emotion and experience.
As reported by Variety, Cage, accepting his Best Actor Saturn Award for his role in Dream Scenario, used his acceptance speech to voice his concerns. He emphasized the importance of human creativity and emotional depth in acting, contrasting it with the limitations of AI. He stated that allowing AI to manipulate even a small aspect of a performance would ultimately compromise the integrity and truth of the art form, replacing it with mere financial gain.
Cage believes the core purpose of art, including acting, is to reflect the human experience through a deeply personal and emotional creative process. He contends that AI, lacking this inherent human element, would produce art devoid of heart, ultimately resulting in a homogenized and lifeless product. He urged actors to protect themselves from AI's interference, advocating for authentic and honest self-expression.

Cage's stance echoes similar concerns expressed by other actors, particularly in the voice acting field where AI-generated recreations of performances are becoming increasingly common, even in high-profile video games. Several voice actors, including Ned Luke (Grand Theft Auto 5) and Doug Cockle (The Witcher), have openly criticized the use of AI, highlighting its potential to negatively impact actors' livelihoods.
The film industry itself is also divided on the issue. While renowned director Tim Burton expressed his unease with AI-generated art, Zack Snyder (Justice League, Rebel Moon) advocates for embracing AI's potential rather than resisting its integration into filmmaking.
