Atari's Infogrames Label Acquires Surgeon Simulator Franchise
Atari, through its Infogrames subsidiary, has announced the acquisition of the Surgeon Simulator franchise from tinyBuild Inc., the game's publisher. Infogrames, relaunched by Atari, serves as a label for titles outside Atari's core portfolio, reviving a brand renowned for its '80s and '90s game development and global distribution. This acquisition marks a significant step in Infogrames' mission to expand its reach through digital and physical distribution, and to develop new installments and sequels.
Infogrames' history includes the development of classics like 1992's Alone in the Dark (recently reimagined by Pieces Interactive), and the publishing of titles such as the Backyard Baseball and Putt-Putt series, as well as Sonic Advance and its sequel. After rebranding under Atari in 2003, the company went through bankruptcy in 2013, only to reemerge a year later as part of the modern Atari corporation. This recent acquisition of Surgeon Simulator follows Atari's purchase of Totally Reliable Delivery Service in April 2024, further bolstering Infogrames' resurgence.
"Surgeon Simulator, more than 10 years after its initial release, remains a uniquely popular franchise," stated Infogrames Manager Geoffroy Châteauvieux. "Acquiring a game with such enduring appeal was a rare opportunity, and we're thrilled to add it to the Infogrames portfolio."
Surgeon Simulator's Continued Success
Surgeon Simulator, originally released on PC and Mac in 2013, features the hilariously inept surgeon Nigel Burke performing operations on a patient affectionately nicknamed "Bob." The game's blend of dark humor and unconventional gameplay quickly gained popularity, prompting ports to iOS, Android, and PS4 in 2014, followed by a VR version for PS4 and Windows in 2016 and a Nintendo Switch release (Surgeon Simulator CPR) in 2018. A sequel, Surgeon Simulator 2, launched on PC and Xbox in 2020 and 2021 respectively. The future of the franchise remains promising despite Bossa Studios, the original developer, undergoing staff reductions in late 2023 and tinyBuild acquiring several of their IPs in 2022.
