Astro Bot: A Platforming Champion Crowned
Astro Bot has achieved a remarkable feat, surpassing all other platformers to become the most awarded in history, boasting an impressive 104 Game of the Year wins. This achievement surpasses the previous record holder, It Takes Two, by a significant 16 awards.
Initially launched in September 2024, Astro Bot, an expansion of the popular PS5 tech demo, Astro's Playroom, quickly garnered critical acclaim, becoming the highest-rated new game release of the year. The game's success culminated in a triumphant win at The Game Awards 2024, securing the coveted Game of the Year award. However, this was just the beginning.
A recent discovery by Twitter user NextGenPlayer, referencing gamefa.com's Game of the Year Award Tracker, revealed the extent of Astro Bot's success. The 104 Game of the Year awards solidify its place as the most awarded platformer ever.
While this is a monumental achievement, matching the award counts of industry giants like Baldur's Gate 3 (288 wins), Elden Ring (435 wins), and The Last of Us Part 2 (326 wins) remains improbable. Nevertheless, Astro Bot's success is undeniable. With over 1.5 million copies sold by November 2024, the game, developed by a team of less than 70 people over three years, has proven to be a massive commercial success for Team Asobi and Sony. Astro Bot has undoubtedly transitioned from a relatively unknown title to a major PlayStation franchise.
