The long-awaited live-action film adaptation of the iconic anime and toy franchise, Mobile Suit Gundam, has officially entered full production. Bandai Namco and Legendary have signed an agreement to co-finance this exciting project, which was first announced back in 2018. Although it has been relatively quiet since then, recent developments from Legendary and the newly established Bandai Namco Filmworks America signal that fans can now eagerly anticipate the first-ever live-action Gundam movie hitting the big screens globally.
The film, currently without an official title, will be helmed by Kim Mickle, known for directing Sweet Tooth. This marks the first live-action venture for a franchise that boasts an impressive portfolio of 25 anime series, 34 animated films, 27 original anime productions, and a highly successful toy line, generating over $900 million annually.
Legendary and Bandai Namco have promised to release more details as they are finalized, although no specific release windows or plot details have been disclosed yet. A teaser poster has been shared to build anticipation among fans.
"Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979, established the genre of 'real robot anime' that transcended the traditional dichotomy of good versus evil prevalent in robot anime up to that point. With its realistic portrayal of war, detailed scientific explorations, and intricately interwoven human dramas that treated robots as 'weapons' called 'mobile suits,' it sparked a massive cultural phenomenon," the companies stated.
