ScratchJr: A Fun Introduction to Coding for Young Children (Ages 5-7)

ScratchJr is a user-friendly programming app designed to introduce children aged 5 and up to the exciting world of coding. Kids can create interactive stories and games by dragging and dropping colorful blocks to control characters. Watch as their creations move, jump, dance, and sing!

The app lets children personalize their projects by adding their own voices, sounds, and even photos. They'll bring their characters to life using simple, intuitive programming commands.

Inspired by the popular Scratch programming language, ScratchJr simplifies the interface and coding concepts to be developmentally appropriate for younger learners. Features are carefully crafted to support children's cognitive, personal, social, and emotional growth.

We believe coding is a crucial 21st-century skill, similar to reading and writing. It empowers children to not just interact with technology, but to create and express themselves through it. Through coding, children develop problem-solving skills, project design abilities, and crucial sequencing skills—all essential for future academic success. They also engage with math and language in a fun and meaningful way. With ScratchJr, learning and coding go hand-in-hand.

ScratchJr is a collaborative project involving the Developmental Technologies group at Tufts University, the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab, and the Playful Invention Company. Two Sigma contributed to the Android version. The artwork is by HvingtQuatre Company and Sarah Thomson.
