Xbox Revives Friend Requests: A Decade-Long Wait Ends!
Responding to years of player requests, Xbox has reinstated the friend request system, marking a significant shift from the "follow" system implemented a decade ago. This welcome change allows for more controlled and intentional online friendships.
A Two-Way Street: More Control, More Connection
Xbox Senior Product Manager, Klarke Clayton, announced the return, stating, "We’re thrilled to announce the return of friend requests. Friends are now a two-way, invite-approved relationship, giving you more control and flexibility." The familiar friend request functionality will be accessible via the People tab on Xbox consoles.
The previous "follow" system, while fostering an open social environment, lacked the direct connection and control many players desired. The distinction between friends and followers was often unclear, leading to confusion.
The "follow" feature will remain for one-way connections, enabling users to track content creators or communities without reciprocal approval. Existing friends and followers will be automatically categorized under the new system.
Privacy First: Enhanced Settings for Peace of Mind
Microsoft emphasizes user privacy. New privacy and notification settings will accompany the friend request update, allowing users to manage who can send requests, who can follow them, and which notifications they receive. These settings will be readily available in the Xbox settings menu.
Positive Reception and Anticipation
The announcement has generated overwhelmingly positive feedback on social media. Many users express relief and amusement, highlighting the previous system's shortcomings. While the update caters to social players, it doesn't diminish the appeal of solo gaming.
Although a precise release date is pending, Xbox Insiders on consoles and PC are currently testing the feature. A full rollout is expected later this year. Join the Xbox Insiders program for early access. Download the Xbox Insider Hub on your Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, or Windows PC.
