Steam Deck Game Reviews & Impressions
NBA 2K25 Steam Deck Review
Despite the usual yearly sports game skepticism, NBA 2K25 stands out. It's the first PC version since the PS5 launch to feature the "Next Gen" experience, matching console counterparts. Furthermore, the official PC FAQ confirms Steam Deck optimization. My experience on Steam Deck, along with PS5 and Xbox Series X, reveals a satisfying game, though with typical 2K quirks.
Key improvements for PC players include ProPLAY technology (previously exclusive to PS5/Xbox Series X) and the PC debut of WNBA and MyNBA mode. If you've held off on recent PC 2K titles, this is the definitive version. Here’s hoping for continued Next-Gen PC releases and dedicated Steam Deck support.
The PC and Steam Deck versions boast 16:10 and 800p support. AMD FSR 2, DLSS, and XeSS are included, but I disabled them (reasons explained later). Adjustable settings include v-sync, dynamic v-sync (targeting 90/45fps), HDR (Steam Deck compatible!), texture detail, overall quality, and shader options. Initial shader caching is recommended for optimal gameplay, though the game performs a quick re-cache on each boot.
Extensive graphics options are available, allowing for granular control over shader detail, shadows, player/crowd detail, NPC density, and more. I opted for low/medium settings, disabling upscaling for sharper visuals. Capping the framerate at 60fps at 60hz via the Steam Deck quick access menu provided the best stability and clarity.
The default Steam Deck preset, while functional, appeared overly blurry. This prompted my manual adjustments.
Offline play is limited. While the game boots in offline mode, MyCAREER and MyTEAM are inaccessible. Quick play and eras are playable offline, with noticeably faster load times.
Technically, the console versions surpass the Steam Deck experience. However, after years on Switch and Steam Deck, I find myself playing more on Valve's handheld. Load times are the primary difference, being slower on Steam Deck even with an OLED's internal SSD. Cross-play with consoles is absent.
Microtransactions remain a concern, particularly impacting certain game modes. If your focus is pure basketball gameplay, their impact is minimal. However, the $69.99 price point should be considered.
NBA 2K25 delivers a superb portable basketball experience on Steam Deck, matching PS5/Xbox Series X feature parity. With minor adjustments, it looks and performs exceptionally well. 2K has finally brought the full feature set to PC. Be mindful of the microtransactions.
NBA 2K25 Steam Deck review score: 4/5
Gimmick! 2 Steam Deck Impressions
(See Shaun's Switch review for background.) Gimmick! 2 runs smoothly on Steam Deck, even without Valve verification, benefiting from recent Steam Deck and Linux fixes.
The game is capped at 60fps; forcing your Steam Deck screen to 60hz (especially on OLED) is recommended to avoid jitter. While lacking graphics options, it supports 16:10 for menus. Gameplay remains 16:9.
The 60fps cap isn't a significant drawback. Steam Deck verification seems likely given its out-of-the-box performance. The game itself lives up to expectations.
Arco Steam Deck Mini Review
Arco, a dynamic turn-based RPG, has received significant updates since its initial release, improving upon its already strong foundation. This review focuses on the updated Steam Deck version.
The blend of turn-based and real-time elements, combined with the compelling story and audio, creates a unique experience. The combat system is innovative, and the character-driven narratives add depth.
Steam Deck compatibility is excellent, running at a capped 60fps with 16:9 support. An assist mode (beta) offers options to skip combat or activate infinite dynamite, and allows skipping the first act on replays.
Arco exceeded expectations. The visuals, music, and story are exceptional. A free demo is available.
Arco Steam Deck review score: 5/5
Skull and Bones Steam Deck Mini Review
Skull and Bones, recently released on Steam, is playable on Steam Deck with a "Playable" Valve rating. The initial Ubisoft Connect login process is somewhat cumbersome.
For stable performance, a 30fps frame rate limit is recommended at 16:10 and 800p, utilizing FSR 2 quality upscaling (performance mode offers better stability). Low settings (except high textures) provide a good balance.
Early impressions are positive, showcasing potential with ongoing updates. A free trial is recommended. The game is online-only; cross-progression with consoles is available.
Skull and Bones Steam Deck review score: TBA
ODDADA Steam Deck Review
ODDADA is a unique music-making experience, functioning as an interactive toy. The visuals are stunning, and the creative tools are extensive. It's best played with touch controls or a mouse, currently lacking controller support.
On Steam Deck, it runs at 90fps with adjustable resolution, v-sync, and anti-aliasing. Menu text is small.
Despite the lack of controller support, it's highly recommended for music enthusiasts and creative individuals. Steam Deck verification is pending.
ODDADA Steam Deck review score: 4.5/5
Star Trucker Steam Deck Mini Review
Star Trucker blends automobile simulation and space exploration. While not mastering either genre, it creates a unique experience. It runs well on Proton Experimental.
The core gameplay loop involves space exploration, job completion, and unlocking new content. Visuals, writing, and radio banter are highlights.
Extensive graphics options are available. A custom preset with low shadows and normal settings (excluding temporal anti-aliasing) achieved around 40fps.
Control issues are a notable drawback.
Despite its flaws, Star Trucker offers a surprising and enjoyable experience. Further optimization for Steam Deck is hoped for.
Star Trucker Steam Deck review score: 4/5
DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Mini Review
DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia, a visual novel, runs flawlessly on Steam Deck. It features 16:9 support at 720p and smooth cutscenes. Configuration of the confirm button (A or B) and aspect ratio is recommended.
Highly recommended for fans of the series, serving as a great sequel to Rio Reincarnation.
