PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)
The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is unlikely to last.
The scarcity stems from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020 and, more recently, the PS5 Pro in November 2024. Neither the Pro nor the Digital Edition includes a built-in disc drive, forcing users who want to play physical media to purchase the drive separately. This has created significant demand, particularly in the US, where the official accessory has been consistently in short supply for months.
While some retailers have restocked, including Amazon US and PlayStation Direct (at the standard $79.99 MSRP), availability remains precarious. A third-party Walmart seller was also found offering the drive, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with extremely limited stock.

PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits:
PlayStation Direct limits purchases to one disc drive per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers.
The ongoing shortage, also affecting the UK since late 2024, is likely linked to the PS5 Pro's lack of a disc drive option. Gamers seeking the best PS5 experience and physical media compatibility are forced to purchase the drive separately, exacerbating the existing demand.
With major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy still reporting stock shortages, the issue is far from resolved. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
