PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But No Home Run

A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after several hours of play, it's a promising entry.

HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for years, starting with The Golf Club a decade ago. This experience is evident in 2K25's polished feel. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking a truly massive course roster (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC when surveying holes, didn't detract significantly.

PlayThe improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. The right stick control (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) provides satisfying feedback, adjustable for varying skill levels. A forgiving "Perfect Swing" mode caters to casual players, while higher difficulties punish imprecise movements. Lateral movement in the tee box adds strategic depth. Playing as Tiger Woods, the cover athlete, enhanced the experience.

MyCareer mode receives a narrative boost, reminiscent of other sports titles. The inclusion of Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing) adds a fun touch, with choices impacting stat boosts. Earned VC unlocks gear that affects stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests (e.g., achieving 10 consecutive birdies) adds replayability.

PlayThe MyPlayer creator allows for reasonable character customization, complemented by skill trees. While multiplayer wasn't fully explored, the promise of ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies suggests engaging social gameplay, reminiscent of classic titles like Links 2004. Asynchronous options cater to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels without being exceptional in any single area. This makes it hard to generate extreme excitement, but it's a strong contender for golf fans and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
