Circumstantial Evidence Suggests Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Mice
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel functionality: operating as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this feature by game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has yielded numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended "to stick to game console handles." The "mouse soles" designation, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, strongly suggests the Switch 2 Joy-Cons might incorporate mouse-like capabilities.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, implying they are unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a Novel Concept: Lenovo Legion GO Precedent
While innovative for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't entirely unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, allows its right controller to function as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to improve its gliding on surfaces.
The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity further fuels speculation about the Switch 2's design and functionality.
