Chris Evans Denies Return to Marvel Cinematic Universe Despite Reports
Despite recent reports, Chris Evans, the star of the Captain America films, has definitively stated he will not be reprising his role in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project. Evans directly refuted a Deadline report claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling it "not true" in an interview with Esquire.
This contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, the current Captain America, who previously stated his manager informed him of Evans' return. However, Mackie later confirmed that Evans himself denied this, stating he is "happily retired" from the MCU. Evans reiterated this sentiment to Esquire, emphasizing that such rumors resurface periodically since Avengers: Endgame.
While Evans has recently appeared in the MCU's Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a smaller, comedic role distinct from his central Captain America arc.
The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang, from the franchise after facing assault and harassment charges. Majors was poised to become the MCU's next major antagonist, but his departure has reportedly caused significant disruption to Marvel's plans.
With Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., now confirmed as the new primary villain, speculation about other original Avengers returning has intensified. However, aside from Downey Jr.'s casting, no further returns have been officially confirmed.
Benedict Cumberbatch, the Doctor Strange actor, confirmed his character's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but indicated a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also rumored to appear.
