Simu Liu, the Marvel star, is spearheading efforts to revive the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reports Liu's response to a fan on X/Twitter, confirming he's actively pursuing the project with the rights holders. "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen," he stated.
The film's development history is checkered. Initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, the project vanished a year later. Recently, Yen confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, ultimately thwarted by the unpredictable nature of Hollywood. "I waited for years...and unfortunately...I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?" Yen lamented.
Liu's intervention reignites hope for this Hong Kong-set action franchise. However, the success of his endeavor to secure the rights and bring the film to fruition remains uncertain.
The original Sleeping Dogs video game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows undercover detective Wei Shen's infiltration of a Hong Kong Triad. Critically acclaimed, earning an 8/10 from IGN, the game surprisingly lacked sequels.
