Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans; Players Advocate for Expanded Character Ban Feature
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning numerous innocent players. The mass ban, intended to target cheaters, incorrectly flagged a significant number of non-Windows users employing compatibility layers such as those used by Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck players.
The erroneous bans, implemented on January 3rd, were subsequently lifted after NetEase identified the cause. The company acknowledged the inconvenience and urged players to report any instances of actual cheating, offering an appeal process for wrongful bans. The reliance on compatibility layers, particularly Proton for SteamOS, has been highlighted as a recurring source of false positives in anti-cheat systems.
Separately, a significant portion of the Marvel Rivals player base is advocating for the expansion of the in-game character ban feature. Currently, this feature, allowing players to remove specific characters from selection, is only available at Diamond rank and above. Players in lower ranks express frustration at the lack of this mechanic, arguing it limits strategic diversity and creates unbalanced matchups.
Reddit discussions reveal widespread sentiment that extending the character ban system to all ranks would enhance gameplay, providing valuable learning opportunities for newer players and promoting more balanced team compositions. While NetEase has yet to officially respond to this feedback, the player community's call for change is gaining traction.
