Once Human sits pretty at 230,000 peak player count, but it\'s still a long way out from mobile

NetEase's post-apocalyptic survival game, Once Human, achieved a remarkable 230,000 peak concurrent players on Steam upon its PC debut, securing a top-seven spot in sales and a top-five position in most-played games. While this initial success is noteworthy, the peak player count suggests a potential decline in player numbers shortly after launch. This is particularly interesting considering the game initially boasted over 300,000 Steam wishlists.

Scheduled for a mobile release in September, Once Human has already announced exciting updates. These include a PvP mode pitting the Mayflies and Rosetta factions against each other, and a new PvE area in a northern mountain region, introducing fresh challenges and enemies. The game, set in a world ravaged by a catastrophic event leading to supernatural occurrences, is a highly anticipated title from NetEase.

Despite its apparent readiness, NetEase has unexpectedly delayed the mobile launch, maintaining the September release window. However, the game's continued strong performance in sales and player engagement on Steam remains encouraging.

A Cause for Concern? The use of "peak" player count is crucial. The average player count may be significantly lower, and a rapid drop-off from the peak could signal trouble for NetEase. This is especially relevant considering the substantial number of initial Steam wishlists.

NetEase, known for its mobile game dominance, is clearly making a concerted effort to expand into the PC market. While Once Human boasts impressive graphics and gameplay, a swift shift in primary audience might prove challenging.

Regardless of the initial player count fluctuations, the mobile release of Once Human is highly anticipated. While waiting, explore our curated lists of the best and most anticipated mobile games of 2024 for alternative gaming options.
