Microsoft Delays Fable to 2026, Unveils New Gameplay Footage
Microsoft has pushed back the release of its highly anticipated Fable reboot from 2025 to 2026, but offered a glimpse of exciting new gameplay to soften the blow. Developed by Playground Games (creators of the Forza Horizon series), this Fable represents a fresh take on the classic Xbox franchise originally developed by the now-defunct Lionhead Studios.
Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan, in a recent Xbox Podcast appearance, reassured fans that the delay is worthwhile. He emphasized his complete confidence in Playground Games, highlighting their proven track record with the critically acclaimed Forza Horizon series. He described the upcoming Fable as a visually stunning and incredibly playable experience, boasting "British humor" and a breathtakingly realized version of Albion, the game's fantasy world. The delay, he explained, is to ensure the best possible game for players.

The announcement included a 50-second pre-alpha gameplay trailer. This brief but impactful footage showcased various combat styles using a one-handed sword, a two-handed hammer, a two-handed sword, and a fireball spell. A particularly intriguing scene depicted the protagonist setting a trap with sausages to lure a werewolf-like creature into a fight.
Initially announced in 2020 as a "new beginning," the Fable reboot has seen several updates. A 2023 Xbox Game Showcase offered a first look, followed by another trailer during the June 2024 Xbox Showcase event. This marks the first mainline Fable game since 2010's Fable 3, and remains one of Xbox Game Studios' most anticipated upcoming releases.
