Sid Meier's acclaimed *Civilization* series enters a new era with *Civilization VII*. Available on virtually every major gaming platform, a key question is whether cross-play and cross-progression are supported. Let's dive in.
Does Civilization VII Have Cross-Play?
Image Source: FiraxisThe short answer is yes, but with important nuances. Cross-play requires an active 2K account linked across your chosen platforms. However, compatibility varies. On PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, macOS, and Linux, cross-play functions seamlessly, offering all standard maps and player counts across historical ages.
The exception is the Nintendo Switch. Due to hardware limitations, the Switch version supports smaller map sizes and fewer players in certain eras than other platforms. The Switch version cannot handle standard or larger map sizes. Multiplayer limits are four players in Antiquity and Exploration Ages, and six in the Modern Age. While playable on Switch, these limitations impact online cross-play experiences.
Does Civilization VII Have Cross-Progression?

Unlike cross-play, cross-progression in Civilization VII is straightforward. With an active 2K account, your progress is synced across all linked platforms. This means no restarting from scratch when switching between PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, or other supported platforms. This feature, unlike in Civilization VI where it was a post-launch addition, is available from day one in Civilization VII, reflecting modern player expectations. Whether you're gaming on a Steam Deck, Switch, PC, or console, your progress is saved and accessible.
Civilization VII releases on February 11.
