In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most pivotal decisions awaits players near the game's conclusion: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after obtaining the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.

Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this dilemma, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries immense weight, potentially leading to companion sacrifices. High skill checks (30+) may be needed to influence companion decisions.
(Spoilers Ahead!)
Should You Free Orpheus?
This decision hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).

Siding with the Emperor: This results in Orpheus's absorption, potentially upsetting Lae'zel and Karlach due to its impact on their personal quests. While advantageous in defeating the Netherbrain, it may not appeal to all players.
Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to align with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight, and if asked, he'll sacrifice himself to prevent others from becoming Mind Flayers.
In short: choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation; free Orpheus if you accept that risk for your companions. The Emperor's choice might alienate Lae'zel and send Karlach back to Avernus.
The Moral High Ground?
The "good" choice depends on your definition. It boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him, while others may find Voss and Lae'zel's demands excessive. The Gith prioritize themselves, even if impacting the wider world.
The Emperor is generally benevolent, aiming to defeat the Netherbrain and assist the party. He acknowledges necessary sacrifices. Following his plan might lead to Mind Flayer transformation, but it remains a morally sound path. Remember, multiple endings exist, so strategic choices can lead to a favorable outcome for all.
