Zenless Zone Zero Voice Actors Say They Found Out They Were Replaced When the Patch Notes Went Live

Mar 16,2025 Author: Evelyn

Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), claim they learned of their replacement via the game's patch notes. This situation highlights the ongoing conflict between SAG-AFTRA and the video game industry over the use of generative AI in replicating voice actor performances. While Zenless Zone Zero, developed by HoYoverse, isn't directly subject to the strike (pre-dating its July 25, 2024 commencement), the actors chose not to sign new contracts, citing solidarity with striking union members and the lack of SAG Interim Agreement protections regarding AI.

Chase explained on Bluesky that while the project wasn't technically "struck," it lacked the AI rights protections the union is fighting for. Many actors are voluntarily forgoing work on such projects to support the union's efforts. Chase knew replacement was a possibility but hoped HoYoVerse would wait until their return. Thurkettle, a non-union member, expressed similar sentiments, stating his decision was a personal stand against the potential misuse of AI in the industry, even at the cost of his role. Both actors learned of their replacements through the patch notes, with no prior communication from HoYoVerse or Sound Cadence. HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment.

This isn't an isolated incident. Activision previously confirmed recasting of some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies characters after fans noticed voice changes. Zeke Alton (William Peck) and Julie Nathanson (Samantha Maxis) were replaced, with Alton expressing concern about the lack of credit given to the replacement actors, potentially misleading fans about his continued involvement.
