Pokémon Go Director's Interview: Why Fans Shouldn't Worry About Scopely

Apr 03,2025 Author: Michael

After the recent acquisition of Pokémon Go developer Niantic by Scopely, the company behind Monopoly Go, fans have expressed a range of concerns, from fears of increased advertisements to worries about personal data privacy. However, a recent interview with Michael Steranka, a product director at Niantic, published on Polygon, aims to alleviate these concerns.

In the interview, Steranka highlights the alignment in vision between Niantic and Scopely, expressing confidence that the latter would not introduce intrusive ads into Pokémon Go. He also firmly stated that Niantic would not share or sell player data to third parties, a crucial assurance for privacy-conscious players. Steranka concluded by emphasizing that the transition to working under Scopely would have minimal impact on Niantic's team and operations.

ytIf it ain't broke...While some might worry about corporate influence, I believe Scopely will likely maintain a light touch on Pokémon Go's operations. The game has been and continues to be highly successful, and the more significant business development for Niantic appears to be the new spin-off team focused on advancing AR technology.

Steranka also stressed the close involvement of The Pokémon Company in decision-making processes for Pokémon Go, suggesting that any actions they would not approve are unlikely to happen now or in the future.
